The Calculation is Different
AOTC Math (Better)
It covers 100% of the first $2,000 you spend, plus 25% of the next $2,000.
Spend $4,000 → Get $2,500 credit.
LLC Math (Worse)
It covers a flat 20% of the first $10,000 you spend.
Spend $4,000 → Get $800 credit.
(To get the max $2,000 LLC credit, you must spend $10,000 in tuition).
Pro Tip: Family Strategy
You can’t claim both credits for the same student in the same year. But…
Mixing and Matching
Child A (Freshman): Claim AOTC ($2,500).
Child B (Grad Student): Claim LLC ($2,000).
