Watch Out for “Half-Days” (1:00 PM Close)

On these days, the market opens normally but shuts down 3 hours early. Volume is usually tiny as traders leave for vacation.

  • Friday, Nov 27, 2026 (Black Friday / Day after Thanksgiving)
  • Thursday, Dec 24, 2026 (Christmas Eve)

Note: If you have options expiring on these days, handle them in the morning!

“Why is my bank closed but the stock market open?”

This causes confusion every year. The Bond Market (SIFMA) observes more holidays than the Stock Market (NYSE).

Columbus Day & Veterans Day

On Columbus Day (Oct 12) and Veterans Day (Nov 11):
Banks: CLOSED.
Bond Market: CLOSED.
Stock Market (NYSE/Nasdaq): OPEN.
Since banks are closed, wire transfers might be delayed, but you can still buy/sell Tesla stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about Crypto?
Crypto never sleeps. Bitcoin and Ethereum trade 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including Christmas. However, liquidity might be lower on major holidays as institutional desks are empty.
Does “T+1 Settlement” count holidays?
No. Settlement counts “Business Days.” If you sell a stock on Friday before a Monday Holiday, the trade settles on Tuesday (T+1), not Monday.
